BROKEN Hill residents were rocked last night before midnight in what was a 2.6 magnitude earthquake.

According to GeoScience Australia, the earthquake hit at 11.45pm in a southern direction.

The quake was in line with the Mount Gipps motel and Stephen's Creek but further inland.

Fifty-four people have reported feeling the earthquake which had a depth of 10 kilometres.
