THE Royal Flying Doctor Service’s Wellbeing Place facility in Broken Hill has opened its doors to the public amid power outages affecting Far West New South Wales.

Free tea, coffee and power points for charging have been made available at the centre on Blende Street.

Broken Hill and the Far West have been without a reliable electricity source since last Wednesday night, when a possible tornado took down power lines 50km south of the town.

The town was briefly powered by a sole diesel generator, though a further was started when outage when the generator overheated on Monday night.

Wellbeing Place is operating two generators to power fans, charging power boards, and a kettle for hot beverages.

Anyone was welcome to visit to the centre, whether it be to charge appliances, to work or study, or to stay connected socially.

Local cafe The Deli dropped off cakes and muffins to be enjoyed for free by those using the centre on Tuesday.

The Rotary Club of Broken Hill also hosted a barbecue lunch at Sturt Park for the local community, as many locals had been forced to dispose of perishable foods that went bad in the 19 hours since Broken Hill last had access to power.

A free sausage sizzle and ice-creams are also on offer thanks to a collaboration between Mate Care, PBS Practitioners and Care Together Coordination on Oxide Street near Giovanni’s cafe.
