Culture and country celebrated

BARKINDJI / Malyangaapa man Leroy Johnson said he was tired of Indigenous community only gathering for funerals.

“We wanted to have a gathering for good, that wasn’t based around sorry business," he said.

"Where we can celebrate and share culture.”

To rectify this Mr Johnson created Mutawintji Cultural Festival, a celebration of Indigenous culture in the Mutawintji National Park 100km north of Broken Hill.

In August, he hosted the third and largest event yet over two days, inviting 18 indigenous dance groups from all over country to perform, from as far away as Aruba in Queensland.

More than 300 tickets were sold and attendees were invited to participate in weaving, jewellery making, and art workshops, and shared meal of locally hunted emu and kangaroo.

As for the future of the festival, Mr Johnson said he hoped to continue sharing Indigenous culture and has begun planning what he hoped would be an even bigger festival next year.
