FIREFIGHTERS were amongst surprised locals at the announcement of a new fire station to be built in Oxide Street.

While the local firies were aware they were getting a new build, the manner of the announcement, on an early morning radio station came as a surprise.

Fire Brigade Employees Union country representative Tim Anderson said the local firies contacted him to say the news was made public.
