ESSENTIAL Energy has revealed the reason for rolling blackouts at the Coles and Cheap as Chips complex last week.

The blackouts left Coles unable to sell meat or dairy.

The outages began on Wednesday, May 21, and were resolved on Saturday, May 24.

In a statement, an Essential Energy spokesperson said the issue originated in a substation.
