AUSTRALIA'S richest foot race, the Stawell Gift has been a marquee event in the nation's professional running scene since the 1870s.

Back in 1949 a 20-year-old Broken Hill clerk John Cann etched his name into this great races’ history.

Having the odds of 6/4 he beat the favourite John Stoney. who charged home to finish third.
